The cost of a GS1 membership is based on your company’s worldwide annual turnover.
As a non-profit organisation, we believe that a fee structure based on company size is the fairest approach.

In addition to the annual membership fee, there is a one-time fee for the GS1 Company Prefix (GCP), depending on the number of GTINs/barcodes you require:

What is the difference between GTINs/barcodes sold unofficially and those provided by GS1 Switzerland?
There are various GTIN providers on the market:
Illegal sellers The GTINs offered by illegal sellers are copies that have been taken from existing products. This can lead to confusion and disruptions in the marketplace.
Other sellers (so-called resellers) Some resellers possess large quantities of GTINs due to historical agreements with GS1 US. Customers purchasing these GTINs receive a GTIN-12 and are not listed as the owner in Verified by GS1, which can be a disadvantage in the marketplace.
Officially licensed provider GS1 is the world's only official authority for the allocation of GTINs. GTINs issued by GS1 ensure that your company is recognised as the legitimate owner and can be verified through Verified by GS1.

How do I convert an ISBN into a GTIN?
To encode an ISBN in an EAN-13 barcode, you must first determine whether the ISBN is available as an ISBN-13 (13-digit ISBN) or an ISBN-10 (10-digit ISBN).
If the ISBN is provided as an ISBN-13, no modifications are required. The ISBN-13 can be encoded directly in an EAN-13 barcode.
If the ISBN is provided as an ISBN-10, you should first check with the responsible ISBN agency whether the GS1 prefix 978 or 979 must be used.
The following steps must then be followed:
Add the GS1 prefix for ISBN: Depending on the requirements of the responsible ISBN agency, add either the three-digit prefix “978” or “979” before the ISBN
Remove the ISBN check digit: Remove the last digit or the “X” at the end of the ISBN-10
Calculate the GS1 check digit: Determine the value of the 13th digit according to GS1 requirements
To encode an ISSN in an EAN-13 barcode, the following steps must be followed:
Add the GS1 prefix for ISSN: Add the three-digit number “977” in front of the ISSN.
Remove the ISSN check digit: Omit the eighth digit of the ISSN.
Add variable digits: Add two additional digits in positions 11 and 12. These can be freely assigned by the publisher (e.g. 00) to identify different editions.
Calculate the GS1 check digit: Determine the value of the 13th digit according to GS1 rules
The Basic UDI-DI is assigned by the manufacturer and, when implemented using GS1 standards, is created as a Global Model Number (GMN). It is not identical to the GTIN, is not encoded in a barcode, does not appear on the product or packaging, and serves regulatory purposes such as certificates and the registration of product information.
You can create your Basic UDI-DI yourself using the GS1 GMN Generator.

How do I create logistics labels?
You can use GS1 Print to create GS1-compliant standard labels.
GS1 Print is also suitable for managing SSCC allocations.
In practice, an existing GTIN (e.g. a GTIN-13) is often used, and a packaging indicator (e.g. 1–8) is added to the front. The check digit is then recalculated.
Indicator 9 is reserved exclusively for constructing a GTIN-14 that identifies a variable-measure trade item.
A value of 0 is added when a GTIN-13 is encoded in a symbology that supports only a 14-digit format, such as GS1-128 or ITF-14.
A leading 0 is also commonly added in master data exchange to convert a GTIN-13 into a 14-digit format.
The UDI consists of the Basic UDI-DI as the higher-level identifier, the UDI-DI for the unique identification of a product model, and the UDI-PI for variable production data. When implemented using GS1 Standards, the UDI-DI generally corresponds to a GTIN, while the UDI-PI is represented through Application Identifiers, such as batch number or expiry date
I need a variable measure GTIN. What do I need to do?
Since 2018, GS1 Switzerland has no longer assigned codes for products with variable weight. These codes are generally assigned by the trading partners with whom the manufacturer works. Further information on this topic can be found under the following link.

Is GS1 ISO certified and does GS1 hold a valid accreditation certificate?
GS1 Switzerland does not maintain an ISO 9001-certified quality management system and is not an accredited body for conformity assessment, certification or inspection activities.
In the field of medical devices under the MDR and IVDR regulations, GS1 Switzerland, as the national member organisation of GS1 AISBL, is part of the global GS1 system. GS1 has been officially designated as an Issuing Entity for Unique Device Identifiers (UDI) by both the European Commission and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
An official description of GS1's role as an Issuing Entity can be found here.
In summary, GS1’s legitimacy in the UDI environment is not based on ISO certification or accreditation, but on formal designation by the competent regulatory authorities under the applicable legislation.
When I scan a barcode, nothing is displayed. Why is that?
The barcode only encodes the GTIN shown below it. In order for the product information associated with the GTIN to be displayed, the scanning application must recognise the product data. Therefore, make sure that your product information is integrated into the relevant POS system or into the database of the scanning app.

What is a GTIN?
The GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is required to identify products and subsequently create a GS1 barcode.
War diese Antwort hilfreich?
When do new GTINs/barcodes need to be assigned?
Significant changes or improvements to an item require the assignment of a new GTIN.
The brand owner of the products is always responsible for assigning GTINs/barcodes.
Please contact us if the brand owner of the products does not use the GS1 system.

What is a GLN number?
The GLN (Global Location Number) is a globally unique identification key from the GS1 System used to identify locations or company addresses. These addresses can be physical, legal, or virtual in nature. Examples include a retailer’s store or loading dock, an off-site warehouse of a manufacturer, the berth of a ship, or the billing address of a multinational company.
A GTIN-14 is primarily used to identify trade items such as outer packs, display units, or other packaging hierarchies. It is not intended for point-of-sale (POS) scanning.
However, trade items can also be identified using a GTIN-13.
EAN/UPC barcodes require so-called quiet zones, also known as light margins, on both the left and right sides of the bars. The minimum width of these zones is usually indicated on the left by the first digit and on the right by an angle bracket. Moving the first digit to the left and using the angle bracket is not mandatory.

What do I need to implement UDI?
To implement UDI, you need a GS1 Company Prefix (GCP). You can obtain this either through a membership with system usage or with Starterkit 10.
However, we recommend taking out a membership, as Starterkit 10 does not include entitlement to free consultation and the number of GTINs/barcodes included is often insufficient due to packaging hierarchy levels.
The GS1 Digital Link standard connects physical products with online information, making them web-enabled. It enables much more than simply linking to a web address. Information such as product origin, allergens, care instructions, recycling information, loyalty points, or discounts can be provided and updated dynamically without changing the physical code. Brand owners or retailers determine which resources and URLs are made available.
The ITF-14 (Interleaved Two of Five) barcode is a special variant of the ITF barcode symbology. It is primarily used when print quality is limited, for example when printing directly onto corrugated cardboard.
The ITF-14 should only be used to encode a GTIN-13 with a leading zero and is mainly used for trade items such as cartons.
Important: The ITF-14 is not suitable for point-of-sale (POS) checkout scanners.

What is a Basic UDI-DI (BUDI-DI) number?
The Basic UDI-DI is a higher-level identifier used to group medical devices that have the same intended purpose, risk class, and similar design and manufacturing characteristics. It is used for certificates, declarations of conformity, and registration in regulatory databases, but it does not appear on the product or its packaging.
The UDI-DI (Device Identifier) is the static identifier within the UDI system and is used for the unique identification of a specific product model and packaging level. When implemented using GS1 standards, the UDI-DI generally corresponds to a GTIN; it is marked on the product and packaging and is used for registration and documentation purposes.
The UDI-PI is the variable part of the UDI and is used to identify individual production units of a medical device. It supplements the UDI-DI with production-related information such as batch number, serial number, manufacturing date, or expiry date. When implemented using GS1 Standards, the UDI-PI is represented by one or more Application Identifiers, such as AI 10 (batch number), AI 11 (manufacturing date), AI 17 (expiry date), or AI 21 (serial number). The UDI-PI is assigned by the manufacturer and primarily supports traceability, vigilance, and targeted recalls.
UDI (Unique Device Identification) is a globally standardized system for the unique identification of medical devices. It enables the unique assignment of a product throughout its entire lifecycle and thereby supports traceability, vigilance, and market surveillance. The UDI system consists of a structured identification framework (Basic UDI-DI, UDI-DI, and UDI-PI), marking on the product and packaging, and the registration of relevant product data in a regulatory database (e.g., EUDAMED in the EU). Its purpose is to enhance patient safety and support regulatory processes.
2D codes are two-dimensional barcodes that store information both horizontally and vertically. In contrast, traditional one-dimensional barcodes can only encode information horizontally. As a result, 2D codes offer significantly greater data capacity within a smaller space.
GS1 2D codes include the QR Code with GS1 Digital Link and the GS1 DataMatrix. In addition to the GS1 item number (GTIN), these codes can contain supplementary information such as expiry dates, batch numbers, serial numbers and links to websites. This enables flexible and versatile use across a wide range of industries, from product identification and traceability to enhanced safety.
What colour combinations are allowed for a barcode?
The recommendations for 1D codes can be found here and for 2D codes here.

Which UDI-PI must be provided at a minimum for each class?
The MDR and IVDR do not define a fixed list of UDI-PIs by risk class. Instead, a principle-based approach applies, derived from the UDI requirements of the respective regulation; the binding interpretation is provided by the competent authorities.
Article mapping:
MDR: Art. 27 (UDI system), Annex VI Part C (UDI-PI elements)
IVDR: Art. 24 (UDI system), Annex VI Part C (UDI-PI elements)
Basic principle: All variable production information that appears on the label must also be part of the UDI-PI, regardless of the risk class. Depending on the product, this includes batch or lot number, serial number, manufacturing or expiry date and, where applicable, software identification.

What is the purpose of the Basic UDI-DI / GMN?
The Basic UDI-DI serves as the overarching reference identifier within the UDI system and links all regulatory information associated with a defined product group. It is used in particular in the EU Declaration of Conformity, technical documentation, certificates and attestations issued by Notified Bodies, as well as for the registration of product information in regulatory databases (e.g. EUDAMED in the EU or the corresponding system in Switzerland). The Basic UDI-DI therefore enables the consistent assignment and management of regulatory information but does not appear on the product or its packaging.

Why does the digital product passport exist?
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is being introduced as part of the EU Green Deal and the revised Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). It is intended to support sustainable decisions, promote the circular economy and increase transparency in the supply chain.
According to the European Commission, the Digital Product Passport is a combination of
a unique product identifier,
data collected about the product by various actors in the value chain, and
a physical link (e.g. tagging) between the product and the associated data.
The DPP enables consumers, economic actors and supervisory authorities to obtain reliable information about products (e.g. their sustainability, durability, reparability and disposal options). In this way, it contributes to reducing environmental impacts while creating economic benefits through more efficient use of resources.
Thanks to the use of international GS1 standards, product information can be shared, understood and processed digitally, automatically and across industries and countries. The DPP thus creates a uniform database along the entire value chain.

What role do authorised representatives (EU Rep or CH Rep) play in UDI registration?
EU Rep (EUDAMED): An authorised representative (EU Rep) assigned to a non‑EU manufacturer generally does not carry out product registration in EUDAMED independently, unless this task has been delegated to them as a LUA User (Local User Administrator) on behalf of the manufacturer. The legal responsibility for the correctness and up‑to‑dateness of the data remains in all cases with the manufacturer or producer.
CH Rep (swissdamed): An authorised representative (CH Rep) assigned in swissdamed to both a Swiss and a non‑Swiss manufacturer is generally responsible for their own product registration. However, the operational execution of the registration can be delegated to the manufacturer by granting the appropriate user rights.

Who enters the data in firstbase: the manufacturer, the Swiss authorised representative (CH‑REP), or the importer?
In firstbase, product master data can generally be provided by different economic operators, e.g. by the manufacturer, the CH‑REP, or the importer. The unique identification of a product is done via the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) or, in the context of medical devices, via the UDI‑DI. The respective data owner is uniquely identified via the GLN (Global Location Number). Together, these two keys define a data record.
Therefore, it may occur that multiple data records for a product are available in firstbase from different data suppliers. The data recipient decides which data record they use.

How do I switch from my current GDSN data pool to firstbase? What happens to my data?
The switch to firstbase is carried out through a planned data migration: your existing product data is securely and completely transferred to the firstbase data pool. A new data entry is not required, as the data is taken over directly and correctly assigned.
GS1 Switzerland coordinates closely with your current data pool and manages the transition. We support you before, during and after the migration and, if needed, also assist with communication to customers and suppliers. This ensures that the switch is smooth, efficient and without any data loss.

How can I prepare my company for the DPP?
Companies should check at an early stage which product information is already available in digital form and which needs to be supplemented or standardised.
Recommended steps:
Inventory of product data – What information exists, and in which systems?
Identification with GS1 standards – introduction or harmonisation of GTIN, GLN, GS1 Digital Link, etc.
Prepare for data exchange – Create processes and interfaces for structured data communication (e.g. via EPCIS).
Optimise information management – define clear responsibilities for data quality and timeliness.
