With GS1 standards against product counterfeiters

Counterfeit protection is an important topic. Food, medicinal products or tobacco products are typical examples where protection against counterfeiting is important from a health or financial point of view. Is it the right product? Has the original product been tampered with or replaced by a counterfeit? The solution for counterfeit protection is serialisation and making every product an original.

In addition to the unique identification via GTIN, each individual product receives a serialised number. Through the combination with the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and the serial number, the products are uniquely identified worldwide. In this way, the entire logistics chain can be monitored and made traceable.

The serialised GTIN can be used independently of the data carrier, either with the GS1 DataBar, GS1 DataMatrix or via EPC/RFID. The decision about which data carrier is used depends on the application. The data content always remains identical.

Through the combination of GTIN and serialisation, the authenticity of the products can be checked at any time with the manufacturer or brand owner. Products are thus better protected against counterfeiting over the entire lifecycle.
