The barcode technology is based on the recognition of patterns that are coded with lines and spaces in different sizes. The different algorithms to code information into barcodes is called a barcode symbology. Guidelines that define the transformation of characters into line and space pattern and define other significant characteristics, are called symbol specifications. "EAN/UPC" is one of the GS1 symbologies.
To benefit from the GS1 Identification and Numbering System, there is a need to define a Data Carrier for each key and process to make it available throughout the supply chain.
The GS1 System supports barcodes as Data Carriers. In addition, the Tag Data Standard for RFID Tags has been defined.
The choice of data carrier heavily depends on the application area: on what product hierarchy level and in what sector will the barcode be used? Is the product intended for the retail point of sale (POS)? What additional information should be encoded?
These are some of the factors determining the data carrier and its size. The following pages provide detailed information on each of the GS1 Data Carriers.
The EAN/UPC Symbology can be read omnidirectionally. These symbols must be used for all items that are scanned at the Point-of-Sale (POS) and may be used on other trade items.
The labelling of logistical relevant items (trade items and logistic units) with barcodes is a necessary requirement for scanning applications (e.g. receiving or sending of goods), for efficient track and trace systems and for cross company quality control systems.
The application of ITF-14 Barcode symbols are limited to be printed on trade items not scanned at retail point of sale. ITF-14 is intended for direct printing on corrugated cardboard carton.
GS1 DataBar is an additional point-of-sale bar code symbology complementing the EAN/UPC barcode. GS1 DataBar enables GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) identification for small hard-to-mark consumer product goods like fresh foods, jewellery and do-it-yourself hardware products, and can carry additional information such as weight, date and/or lot numbers.
GS1 DataMatrix is a standalone, two dimensional matrix symbology that is made up of square modules arranged within a perimeter finder pattern. It is mainly used in the Healthcare sector.
